Promising Partner's most frequently asked questions...

Q:  Are Service Dogs the same as Guide Dogs?

A:  No, but they are similar.  Guide dogs replace a persons vision while a service dog works to replace a person's arms or legs.  They do things like Open and close doors, turn lights on and off, and retrieve dropped objects.

Q:  How long does it take to train a service Dog?

A:  It takes approximately one year to train a service dog but can take more or less depending on the dog.

Q:  How Old are Dogs when you start training them?

A:  Dogs come into training when they are one year of age.  However, when we get the dogs as puppies, they start training with their foster families as young as 8 weeks.

Q:  How do you train the dogs?

A:  We use a method called "click and treat"  it is a type of operant conditioning which means we use only positive reinforcement with our dogs.  It is the same method used by dolphin trainers only instead of a whistle we use a clicker.

Q:  If I make a donation is it tax-deductible?

A:  Yes!  Promising Partners is a 501(C)(3) organization, which means the donations that you give are tax-deductible.

Q:  Who is eligible to receive a dog?

A:  Anyone who has a muscular disability and has the need for assistance.  All you have to do is contact us for an application.  Applications are reviewed on a regular basis, however it is important for you to know that the process is very selective.  We want to be sure that the people who receive our dogs are capable of caring for them and ultimately that the dog will not become a hindrance for them.
