"Helping
people with physical disabilities become more independent through the use of
service dogs and the sharing of God's promises."
What is a Service Dog?
At Promising Partners, service
dogs are highly trained, highly skilled dogs that are placed
with people who have have lost the use of their arms or legs.
They can also be used to help people who have trouble balancing
while they are walking.
Service
dogs perform tasks such as retrieving dropped objects, opening
and closing doors, turning lights on and off, helping with
balance, moving objects out of the way, pulling wheelchairs, and
much much more. Above and beyond what the dogs are trained to
do, they help to knock down some of the social barriers that
come with having a disability.
The term "service dog" is often mistaken as the more widely
known seeing-eye dogs, or guide dogs. The fact is they both
fall under the category of "Assistance Dogs." There are three
types of assistance dogs: Seeing-eye dogs, service dogs and
hearing dogs.
If you would like to learn more about each individual
category of assistance dog you can visit the
Assistance Dogs
International website.
